I would hold self narrated fashion shows creating many-an-outfit using nothing but an over- sized beach towel. It was yellow with two navy blue stripes.
I would get "pretend married", using mom's plastic vase flowers and wearing a doily on my head.
I would pick dandelions and these purple flowers to make bouquets for my mom. She would get out the tiny tupperware vase (bottom of a salt shaker) and give them special display honors on her kitchen window shelf.
Its funny what you remember. I don't remember it being oppressively hot, or cold. I don't remember it raining and ruining my day. When I was younger, it was a treat to set up the sprinkler and run around trying to avoid the cold water I begged to have turned on. We had a big garden. I remember standing in the middle of that garden with mom eating ripe tomatoes right off the vine, like they were apples. Mom would make jarred tomato juice for homemade soup/chili in the winter, and it was my job to listen for all the canning lids to "pop" (caused by the vacuum sealing). We didn't have air conditioning, either, but there was a giant blue box fan that would keep us cool. I remember sitting close in front of it and singing, or talking, because of how funny it made my voice sound. Did anyone else do that?
My first "real" bike was my ticket to freedom! It was turquoise, with a brightly flowered banana seat, and big chopper-style handlebars. ***I cant believe I found a picture of the seat***
I remember washing AND waxing it sometimes in the driveway. I can still feel that little bit of excitement seeing my dad taking it out onto the driveway for the first time. I could now ride my bike to the corner carry-out and up to the schoolyard to swing. At some point I got a humongous metal basket that could haul a serious amount of stuff! I came home crying one day after a tumble, and remember explaining my tears weren't so much for my injuries (cured with the same means as the bee sting), but because my huge basket was full of apples I was bringing home as a "gift", so she could make a pie! I don't remember a pie, but I do remember Mom walking back down the street to help me pick up the lost apples. We didn't have a dog, but I was always tagging along with our neighbor when he walked their dog, Sam. Sam was a basset hound, that seemed as big as a station wagon. I would always plead to be allowed to hold the leash. Our neighbor kindly denied me, since he seemed to have enough sense not to allow me to walk a dog that outweighed me. But.....one time....I must have batted my big brown eyes at him, with the begging, and he turned the leash over to me. Afterall, what could really happen? Weeeel, big lazy Sam had a rabbit run in front of him, and he took off like a shot! You know how they tell you when you're water skiing to let go of the rope when you fall? Yeah, the same theory applies when that dog goes dragging you along behind him down the street. I have no memory of EVER walking Sam again...and I am pretty sure my wounds were healed with mercurachrome, mom's breath, and an iodine stained cat image.
Summer is here. What kind of memories make YOU smile? ...and someone get my mom a tissue 'cause I am sure she is crying.

hahaha! oh, gosh. We never had a dog either when we were growing up, and our neighbors (whom we found out later grew pot in their basement) had these two shivering miniature poodles. My sister and I always fought over the littlest one and always begged our neighbor to let us walk them, but she always said the dogs were too little. We never did the finger things with Bugles, but we did do them with olives. I miss being a kid so much. It sounds like you had an awesome childhood, skinned knees and all!
Oh Val, I love your blog! I DID eat Bugles off of my fingertips,, all ten! And then, I would load them all over again!
I could not log on because I forgot my google information so here is what I wrote:
You know, I don't remember crappy days ruined by rain as a kid either! Funny how that works huh? :o) I do recall staying out till it was so dark, catching firefly's and putting them in mason jars or wearing them as rings on my fingers! I could play marbles and WIN, but today cannot for the life of me, shoot a marble! I was the best "craw-dad" catcher in the neighborhood and was easily suckered into catching them for the happy fisherman just hearing these words "lets see how many craw-dads you can catch"! WOW,, how many kids would do that today??
I remember pancakes and peanut butter being my two favorite foods and swimming in a sulfa creek (coal mine country) that would be considered a health hazard now-a-days! I too remember getting stung ALL OF THE TIME because I NEVER wore shoes in the summer! (I also stepped on nails at least twice a month) My theory: no school, no shoes!
I remember my older sister taking care of me like she was my Mom AND she still does! I remember falling off of a swing set (again, now-a-days would be considered a health hazard) that was so tall that it knocked the wind out of me and I passed out! The last thing I remembered was my Dad carrying me and then waking up in my bed to my older sister crying over me begging me not to die!
I remember when neighbors were allowed to correct us and spank us if we were being out of control and my parents supporting that! As a matter of fact, yesterday my little neighbor kid (about 5-years old) was climbing in a tall pine tree,, and I yelled at him to "get out of that tree" and my daughter telling me to let his parents deal with him! My, how times have changed! Hey, if my kids are doing something that could hurt them, I hope my neighbors have my back too!
Thanks Val, for giving me a "childhood flashback" I truely enjoyed it! :o)

How about the lemon twist? Does anyone remember them? I had one and was pretty good at it. It was a loop that you put around your ankle with a cord and a plastic lemon on the end. You swung it around and jumped over it with the other foot. One year I took it with me to the Ohio State Fair. We stayed in a room above the sheep barn during the whole fair at that time. Our room was right by the balcony that overlooked the show ring. The barn boys (teens who worked in the barn during the fair) stayed in a room at the opposite end of the hall. There were several evenings when I had the boys taking off their work boots to try the lemon twist. It was pretty funny.
Wow, Val! You sure brought back a bunch of memories! Singing into the box fan, eating Bugles off my fingers (after I tired of biting off the little ends and tooting them) and treatments with merchurochrome (although I never got a cat, just a blob).

Do you remember the Friends episode of Pheobe running through the park like no one was looking? She said she was running like a child and she didn't care what people thought. That's how I want to be. I still catch frogs, try to find 4 leaf clovers, would sing in a fan, if I had one, we did have a dog, I fell off the mini bike we had and my dad had to carry me back to the house b/c I thought I broke my ankle, little did I know that I would later get hit by a car on a bigger mini bike and damage my ankle big time, I don't wear shoes most of the time (the bottoms of my feet are always dirty), I pick buttercups and put them under my chin to see if I like butter :), and I just try to so much do what I did as a child b/c I love that feeling of freedom and sometimes, I want to be that naive. Unfortunately, life gets in the way. Thanks for reminding us of all those wonderful times!!
I just found your blog through Stella & Roo and have enjoyed reading your posts. This post really brought back some wonderful summertime memories for me - thank you!!!!
